Thaipusam, celebrated on the day of the full-moon in January-February, commemorates the birthday of the Hindu deity Subramaniam. On this day, Hindus show the sincerity of their faith. Devotees pray for divine help and make vows. When their prayers are answered, they fulfil their vows, by carrying out an act of physical burden; piercing their chest with spikes and lemon, and then either pulling a chariot, or carrying Kavadis, along a 4km route from Serangoon Road to Tank Road.
