The Children of Payatas

In March I visited Manila in the Philippines, and on the eve of my return to Singapore, I decided to pay a visit to the infamous Payatas dump, as much a city as a rubbish dump. Fifty-thousand people live around its fringe, making ends meet, sifting through the garbage, scavenging for recyclables. In spite of the hand fate has dealt them, the children there are always smiling, a reminder to me that there is always something we can be thankful about.
